LinkLube All Weather is our one-stop chain lube for most weather conditions. While the base carrier fluid we use has fast penetrating, chain cleaning properties, it will never become fully dry to the touch. This can lead to unwanted dust attraction in the driest, dustiest conditions, so a more bespoke dry lube is required.

WHY WATER BASED DRIP WAX?

Drip wax gives you clean, quiet wax based performance without removing your chain or using a crockpot. LinkLube Dry applies from the bottle, dries clear and leaves a clean wax layer behind.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

When applied for the first time, it is essential that LinkLube Dry is applied to a well degreased and dry drivetrain.
If a chain is dirty, then dirt and old lube take up space in the rollers, preventing new lube from reaching the places it needs to, and any residual oil-based lube can also result in reduced durability and premature blackening.

  1. Fully degrease before applying fresh lube to ensure there is no old chain oil present. For best results use our Foaming Drivetrain Degreaser or, in the case of brand new chains, use XXX Solvent Degreaser to remove stubborn factory greases.
  2. Ensure you thoroughly rinse your chain with clean water after degreasing (degreaser is designed to eat chain lube after all).
  3. Allow chain to dry thoroughly before application.
  4. Apply to the inside face of the chain only. The light blue color of the chain lube allows you to see exactly where you have and haven't applied.
  5. Keep the chain cycling for 20 seconds to help the lube penetrate fully into the pins and rollers.
  6. Check for over-application. You can tell if you over-apply LinkLube Dry because you’ll see the lube start to fill the narrow chain links. If this happens, just slowly cycle through your gears a few times to transfer the excess lube onto the cassette. You’ll see the lube disappear from the narrow links, leaving lube only where it’s needed on the chain.
  7. Leave to fully dry so the lube goes from a light blue color to completely clear (you’re waiting for the water to evaporate, so leaving it in the sun helps). How long it takes for the water to evaporate—and for the lube to turn clear in color—depends on the weather conditions. This can range from just a few minutes (if hot) to a few hours (if cold and damp). For best results, apply the night before.
  8. Ride!

CAUTION

Do not get LinkLube (or any lube for that matter!) on your brakes or brake pads.

What type of lubricant is best for bike chains?

The basic requirements for a bicycle chain lubricant is for it to keep your chain quiet and smooth while also lasting a long time and keeping your drivetrain clean as possible. The best type of chain lubricant for a bicycle depends heavily on the weather and conditions you are riding in.

For dry and dusty conditions you need our LinkLube Dry Drip Wax chain lubricant which uses durable waxes for a long lasting smooth drivetrain. It also dries dry to the touch so that dust and dirt won’t stick to the chain.

For mixed and changeable (but not soaking wet) conditions our LinkLube All Weather uses a unique blend of waxes and greases to keep you rolling smooth in a wide variety of riding conditions. For even cleaner, longer-lasting performance try our LinkLube All Weather Premium.

For the wettest, filthiest riding conditions you need a chain lubricant which will not wash away at the first sight of a puddle. Our LinkLube Wet has a heavy dose of waxes and corrosion inhibitors to last even the longest, wettest day in the saddle.

Is LinkLube Dry a drip wax chain lube?

Yes. LinkLube Dry is a drip applied wax chain lube using waxes suspended in a water based emulsion.

How do you apply lubricant to a bike chain?

  1. Always fully degrease your drivetrain before applying fresh lube. For best results, use Peaty's Drivetrain Degreaser.
  2. Ensure you thoroughly wash your chain with clean water after degreasing (degreaser is designed to eat chain oil after all)
  3. Remove as much water as you can from the chain. For best results, use Peaty's PT17 General Maintenance Spray.
  4. Give the bottle a good shake
  5. Apply the lube while cycling the chain backwards (eBikes will need to be pedalled forwards in a stand) ensuring every link is adequately covered
  6. Keep cycling the chain for 10 seconds or so to help the lube work its way into your chain
  7. Thoroughly wipe away all excess lube from your chain using a clean cloth (excess lube on the outside of the chain will attract dust in dry conditions).

CAUTION
Do not get LinkLube (or any lube for that matter!) on your brakes or brake pads.

Do I need to clean off excess lubricant?

No, for dry lubricants you don’t need to wipe away any excess because dry lubricants remain dry to the touch so will not attract dust.

For All Weather and Wet lubricants, you do need to thoroughly wipe away all excess lube from your chain using a clean cloth. Excess oil on the outside of the chain will attract dust in dry conditions.

Why do I need to use chain lubricant?

A good chain lubricant will reduce friction between chain and chainrings, improve shifting performance, reduce dirt build-up so make your drivetrain last longer, prevent corrosion, provide smoother, quieter, easier pedalling and either not wash away easily (if wet lubricant) or not attract dust or dirt (if dry lubricant)... In short, yes.

How often should I lube my chain?

As a general rule, you should re-lube every 4 hours of riding time on a mountain bike and 6 hours on a road bike. That said, if your chain is still running quietly and smoothly, then great—keep on riding! Once your chain starts to sound dry and rattly, it's time to reapply.

For road riding, the Canyon DHB Racing Team have found they can achieve around 300km (190 miles) per application in race conditions. Off-road miles may reduce this down to as little as 30 miles, as coarse dust and steep climbs put much more strain on the chain and chain lube.

The durability and longevity of LinkLube Dry will heavily depend on the conditions you’re riding in.

Do I need to clean by drivetrain before use?

Once you're set up using wax lube, you can keep applying directly on top of the old lube. simply brush away any loose residue from the chain and cassette before reapplying.

Depending on riding conditions, your chain may still get some dirt flicked onto it by the front wheel, which can normally be brushed away with a clean dry brush or cloth.

In the case of more stubborn dirt and grime, which cannot be brushed or wiped away, repeat the degreasing process above and reapply.

Can I use this chain lube in dry conditions?

With a name like LinkLube Dry, you’d certainly hope so!

CAN I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT WAX LUBE FORMULATIONS?

There are three options when formulating a wax-based lube:

  1. The time-consuming, messy option: Create a hot-melt wax lubricant. These blocks of hard wax are melted gradually in a slow cooker, and you apply to your chain by completely removing it from your bike and soaking it in the molten wax. This method provides ultimate results but comes with a high cost of equipment, time, effort, and mess.
  2. The quick but compromised option: Create a solvent-based wax lubricant where waxes are suspended in fast-evaporating solvents. Applied in drip form directly to the chain while it is still on the bike, this is quick and much easier than hot-melt wax. The solvents evaporate away quickly, leaving a thin, dry layer of wax in a convenient amount of time. The drawback of this approach, however, is that solvent-based wax lubes can only hold around 15-20% wax content, which results in reduced durability where it matters.
  3. The best all-round option: Create a water-based wax emulsion like LinkLube Dry Drip Wax. This can also be applied conveniently in drip form, directly to a chain still on the bike. By using water rather than a fast-evaporating solvent, the emulsion can hold far more wax content (35-40%), resulting in much higher durability. While water evaporates slightly slower than with solvent-based formulas, the results are well worth the wait!

The bottle I received is a slightly different colour blue?

The final color of LinkLube Dry Drip Wax may vary slightly from batch to batch. This is due to variations in some of the natural waxes we use. Don’t worry, this is normal and won’t in any way affect the performance of the product.

Can I use this chain lube in wet conditions?

LinkLube Dry Drip Wax is formulated to work best in dry conditions.
For best results in wet conditions we recommend Peaty’s LinkLube Wet.
For mixed or changeable weather conditions try LinkLube All Weather and LinkLube All Weather Premium.

Do I apply lubricant to my cassette?

You don’t need to apply lubricant to your cassette.

Living in NORCAL it's dry and dusty most of the time.
I found that dry wax-based chain lube works the best.

After riding, my bike is always coated in lots of dust. I meticulously brush off the dust particularly around the fork and shock seals.

I use a chain brush and cycle the dust off the chain, pulleys and gears. With the Peaty's Dry Lube it cleans easily and the chain looks polished. I simply drip another drop on into each of the rollers and I'm good to go once it has dried. My rides are usually about 20 miles. Despite what they say, you need to re-lube after every ride when in Dusty conditions, you'll hear it if you don't .

Fortunately it only takes a drop on each roller and a couple of minutes of your time and you're on your way with a silent smooth running drivetrain .

This is a good lube. It is perfect for dry dusty weather.

I've tried many chain lubes from Muc-Off, Finish Line, to Rock 'N' Roll; all of which create a black greasy chain with globs of build up in the jockey wheels. Peaty's Dry Link Lube is the perfect chain lube for where I ride (dry, rocky, dusty conditions) it is easy to clean and the chain always looks new after each ride. The lube will work for slightly damp conditions, but I have not tried it in rain or down pours.Cleaning the chain is simple ,take a microfiber and run the chain backwards 10 or so times. No build up in the inner plates or rollers. In the case of a neglected chain, use the Park Tool chain scrubber with water only and watch the old lube come off with ease. Degreaser works, but I always try to use the least aggressive method first.My only complaint is the price of the lube

I've used other products, but this was new, and had good reviews. I've used it now for nearly 50 miles and am very impressed. It forms a waxy surface when dry. Doesn't hard like a candle, but does not seem to collect all the "trail stuff" that a wet lube will. Based on that I'm very confident it's going to help my chain and gearing last as long as possible. I will likely switch to the wet/dry environment lube when and if the rains start here.

Much better than alternatives such as Mucoff dry lube, which smells nice but attracts lots more dirt and grime. Dirt wears your chain and cassette much faster, which translates to big $ if you like high quality components. Strongly recommend switching to this excellent wax based lube instead!

Ive gone through probably 7 or so different lubes from my local shops and vendors. They all did the trick but were not made the same and hence had lacking qualities. Enter Peaty's LinkLube Dry...WOW. No exaggeration!! This has to be a miracle Lube. I instantly noticed a difference in my drivetrain as I shifted on the trails. Literally while still leaving the parking lot I knew there was already a difference!Best of all, it lasts an entire ride session. No diminished results. It lubes well and after doing some research actually 'cleans' as it does its job, too! Easy to wipe down after a ride and clean up, too!It sounds like im overselling this but im not. I challenge you to try this. Best addition to my kit for riding, hands down!

Once you clean your chain and hot wax it, use this after every ride in wet conditions keeps chain squeak free and rust free and sprockets shiny. Only apply to the rollers, not the side walls otherwise you waste this precious expensive nectar.

Impressive lube

Really impressed with this lube. Always used the muc off stuff before and never had a problem with it, but fancied trying another brand so picked this from Peaty's. An immediate improvement. When I have managed to go out on the bike this summer (cheers rain for ruining summer 2023) I've noticed the chain is a lot cleaner on my return and doesn't need cleaning as often. Quite like the nozzle on the bottle, fits perfectly over the chain so makes applying it really easy. Will be trying the all weather one next for autumn.

Does a great job in dry conditions

Does a great job in dry conditions, the chain appears clean and lubed after many outings.Between rides I have tended to apply this after a ride, I use a rag to run along the chain to get it looking clean then apply this and leave until the next ride. Applying on top of a ride time means you might get annoyed waiting for it to dry.Also, put a rag under the chain before applying to save a drippy mess on the floor lol n

Better than mucoff

I started using this replacing my mucoff ceramic, it keeps it cleaner and smells alot nicer and alot less messy to apply, however, it take a few hours to dry depending on the outside temperature.To make sure it's done correctly there should waxy film on the chain and your crank spokes will look white.Also recommend peaty's all weather lube brilliant for the UK climate , where the weather constantly changesUpdate July 2025 , if you ride more than for 4 hours moving time you need to re-apply during your ride this quite annoying , even though wax is still on there, this will quiet down the chain. Because of this i have taken one star off.

An excellent drip on wax

My first time using this product and I love it. I create my own hot melt wax and my recent batch wasn't as well balanced and so I bought this drip on wax to extend the maintenance intervals. I've been really impressed by the ease of application and in operation the chains I have treated with this drip on are super quiet and I've noticed a genuine improvement in shifting quality.
